Georgia Institute of Technology is looking to hire a senior front end developer to help drive its innovation in online collaboration, teaching and learning. This position will work mainly in the context of a large open source project, in close cooperation with software engineers and educational technologists at many of the best universities in the world.
Responsibilities:
- Contribute to a large open source community devoted to enterprise software supporting teaching, learning and research
- Collaborate with peers at partner institutions in distributed and agile teams
- Develop functional prototypes from wireframes and mockups
- Develop optimized/cross-platform front-end code in CSS/XHTML, JavaScript, and AJAX
- Work with designers, students and teachers to refine and improve the user experience
- Work to the highest standards for accessibility and internationalization
Skills:
- 5+ years experience working with high-performance, high-volume websites
- 5+ years experience with JavaScript, HTML, CSS, XML, and cross-browser compatibility
- Some experience in leadership or mentoring roles
- Experience converting PSDs into standards-compliant XHTML and CSS (i.e., slicing)
- Advanced understanding of AJAX frameworks, XML and JSON
- Ability to take mockups and create high-performance web pages that meet the design and technical specifications following accepted best practices for accessibility and performance
- Advanced understanding of front-end optimization techniques, both in page size and perceived rendering time
- Advanced understanding of unobtrusive Javascript techniques
- Ability to work effectively in distributed and remote teams
- Basic proficiency in source code management practices
- Basic knowledge of version control tools such as Subversion or Git
- Desire to learn and use new technologies
- Excellent communication skills are essential
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related discipline
Preferred Skills:
- Experience programming with jQuery or other Javascript frameworks and libraries
- Experience with multivariate user testing
- Background in visual or interaction design
