Wake Forest University: Senior Web Developer

We are looking for a senior web developer who is highly knowledgeable of modern web development best practices and has an expert level of experience with implementing WordPress (especially with WordPressMU) in an environment able to host multiple highly-trafficked sites.

Position Summary:

  • Leads the development and optimization of Wake Forest’s Communication and External Relations (CER) digital properties; works as a partner with the web design lead, ensures appropriate technology considerations are taken into account during the design phase of projects and maintains a working knowledge base of current development best practices.
  • Performs web application development, including application design, development, testing, implementation and maintenance.
  • Maintains a server environment to host multiple CER properties (different websites) powered by one installation of WordPressMU. (This will involve different domains as well as subdomains.) Aids in the conversion of static website design mockups into working web documents (HTML/CSS) and integration into the WordPress when necessary.

Essential Functions:

  • Setup and maintain Apache, MySQL and PHP server environments, including domain and DNS management. Works in conjunction with the Information Systems Operations Center to administer web server configurations and databases. Oversees WordPressMU (multi-user) software installation for website properties.
  • Work as partner and consultant to the design lead, advising appropriate technology considerations during the design phase of projects.
  • Serve as senior developer of digital platforms owned by Communication and External Relations (CER), including website and social media channels.
  • Implement strategies to continuously push out news through a wide range of digital channels.
  • Oversees the University’s web analytics package, including the collection and evaluation of data.
  • Oversees the University calendar development and maintenance.
  • Oversee daily technical development, design and maintenance duties on University Advancement websites and other sites prioritized by the Digital Strategist and implemented by the junior developer.
  • Oversee junior developer and provide support on development work.
  • Maintain knowledge base of current digital development best practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Proficiency with Apache, PHP, MySQL and general server management. As well as FTP, Filemaker Pro, XML, XHTML, HTML, CSS and JavaScript.
  • Ability to take a website design mockup in Adobe Photoshop and convert it to a working web document (HTML/CSS/JS).
  • Familiarity with Mac OS and Windows environments, UNIX-based servers and file permissions, SSH and SFTP.
  • Knowledge of cross-browser, cross-OS compatibility and troubleshooting skills preferred.
  • Ability to integrate static website files into WordPress.
  • Ability to quickly learn new systems/technologies.
  • Strong web research skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and changing priorities as circumstances dictate.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written

Required Experience:

Bachelor’s degree plus 5+ years related experience preferred
